Forget about boxing, here are the Queensberry Rules for photographers! 1. Outstanding presentation adds enormous value to your photography. 2. Using the same albums as everyone else reduces the value of your photography. Ask anyone in the street how much a stack of prints is worth, or a disc of images, or a slideshow. Everyone's been to the mini lab, or burnt a disk, so the answer is, "Not much". What you're paying for when you hire a professional, of course, is their time, skill and artistry. Focusing on the presentation takes nothing away from that. It simply places the photography in a new To View More >>

This clip is from Mad Men, the US TV series about '60s-era Madison Ave ad-men. The guys are planning the launch of the Kodak Carousel. Watch 'em weep. It's not the about the technology, it's not about "new", it's about...  what drives your business. Cheers, Ian To View More >>

That is the big question. Andy Warhol said, “It is art as long as it's signed.” John Cage said, “It is anything you can get away with.” Why is it so important (to some) to be seen/considered as an artist? Are we as photographers overselling what we do when we call it art? Are we selling our vision as artists or our ability to use a filter or two to create art for the masses? Doc Ross once said that, ”If it comes with a statement then it is art ... otherwise it is just decoration.” So Art has a signature, intent, and a certain freedom. Most importantly, ‘Who cares?’ Maybe we care To View More >>

As a proud parent I look at other babies and want to know if we are doing okay. (It's the first time and we have no standard to work from.) When two babies meet it is easy to overlook the needs of the other parent as you well up with pride in the achievements of your offspring. Photographers can be the same with their personal prides. Good etiquette with babies is to resist outdoing the other parent with the successes of your own child (sleeps through night ... makes own breakfast, gifted, etc). Because even though it is reassuring to acknowledge the superiority of your genealogy it has no social To View More >>

As a photographer I'm sure the thought of losing your sight must be horrifying. So here's a little inspiration. Amazing teenager Ben Underwood was blind but got around almost as well as sighted people by teaching himself to "echolocate". This video was voted one of the most inspiring on the web on Mashable. NB: Ben sadly passed away earlier this year, but his inspirational story proves that no obstacle is insurmountable. Cheers, Nigel To View More >>

For most artists, the real value of their work isn't recognized until they're gone. Elvis's estate is worth far more than it was in his heyday. The works of Da Vinci, Picasso and Van Gogh are now worth hundreds of millions of dollars. We still enjoy Humphrey Bogart movies. They're still making movies about Ian Fleming's Bond character. And of course, Michael Jackson has left a legacy of work that will continue to grow in recognition and popularity. You're an artist. How will your work be remembered and valued? Not just by the people you created it for, but by their descendants? That's something To View More >>

Never in a million years would I do this at my wedding, but that’s what makes this video terrific. It’s authentic, fun ... and funny. Five minutes is enough to learn to like these people and wish you were there. What a great gift to their future. Cheers, Ian PS if you're having trouble viewing it, try watching it here. Meet Dave and Alianor, a tattoo artist from Atlanta, and a Catholic girl from Michigan. Tim Will shot their wedding in Atlanta last year. I could tell you about how the bridal party smoked and drank heavily before the ceremony, or that they carried guns with their names inscribed on the handles, or that the bride married in black. But I won't. Tim's images can do the talking... Instead, I'd rather highlight this album as a great example of how an anything-but-traditional wedding can fit so beautifully into a Queensberry. We're proud that our albums are so flexible and diverse. And that our album To View More >>
