"You don't want a photographer - you want a storyteller ... "The camera is just a tool I use to tell the story ... "I don't work for you." Paul Edwards from the [b] School explains his philosophy about photography... Food for thought. Cheers, Nigel To View More >>

The stranger in the coffee shop looked at us, almost as if we were insane, and said in a tired voice, "Sleep while you can!". It was an ominous warning, over a month ago. We were (Jo was) a month off giving birth and at the time sleeping was getting uncomfortable. On June the 2nd, 2009, Ida Valentina van Kan graced us with her arrival. 7lb 3oz of beautiful girl. [caption id="attachment_3365" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="Ida Valentina"][/caption] After 10 days the warning seems premature. Sleep isn't too bad, in fact we feel incredibly lucky. I am learning things from her. She will let To View More >>

Final feedback from my email, Your next album company Unless you have someone on the ground talking to people you are never going to get the real story... That comment's from the UK, where we actually do have someone on the ground – take a bow, Jo! But Jo, a Londoner, is the exception not the rule. Most of our client support people work from New Zealand. Gino, for example, gets up really early to talk to people in North America, while Kirsten works really late to help Jo with the Brits. But it's great to meet people face-to-face, so why don't we base more people locally? First, where would To View More >>

1.4 million people have seen this movie already, but don't let that stop you. A few days after selling out Boston's Symphony Hall, one of the world's best violinists went busking with his Stradivarius for 43 minutes in a DC metro station. A thousand people streamed past. A handful stopped, nobody clapped ... and he made $32. Grab a coffee and read Gene Weingarten's story in The Washington Post. He arranged the performance as "as an experiment in context, perception and priorities". Do I want to make a cheap marketing point out of this? Not really, but it makes you think. When people contact us about their wedding, if they are doing a general search, they most often ask, 'How much to shoot our wedding?' Eventually they get around to 'What do I get?' and finally 'Are you available?' This email just came in. It says it all really. To whom it may concern,Would it be possible to be sent a full price list of your wedding packages? Thanks, Justin We all want our clients to care, because it is the caring that makes them better clients. So what are we selling? Are we selling a product at a price? Are we selling our ability to make great photographs? Are we selling our ability To View More >>

More feedback on my email, Your next album company It's hard to compete ... We've seen a massive influx of photographers from Eastern Europe charging very low prices and supplying reasonable products.I understood the impact of this EU "migration" in British hotels and restaurants, but I honestly hadn't thought about the impact on photographers (Jo and Kirsten will be shaking their heads!). Even so I feel that this kind of competition is always with us ... in one form or other. The purpose of outstanding presentation is to add value to your photography. That's why, whoever you use, your albums must To View More >>

[caption id="attachment_922" align="alignleft" width="225" caption="Pavan and Sara"][/caption] Have you heard that funny story Danny tells about how far PJ has come? How it was originally developed by a one guy in a cupboard? And that poor guy had to answer the phone as well? Stretching it a bit, Danny, but not much... Anyway, if you've been with PJ since Day One you'll remember that guy, Pavan ... and maybe how worried you were that the wheels would fall off when he left to further his career! Well the wheels didn't fall off (thank you Sepehr) but we've kept in touch with Pavan, who's an awesome To View More >>

We told War Story 1 (about the guy whipping out a flash drive and challenging Danny to replicate his Photoshop layout) to a gentleman, who... whipped out his own flash drive and challenged Danny to do the same! He signed up too - thank you sir. Think of PJ Remix this way - as a tool for laying out PSD files. Really fast. Unlike most programs we saw at Focus, Remix doesn't compromise your Photoshop experience, it supercharges it. Cheers, Ian To View More >>

At our FOCUS booth a guy walked up to Danny and asked him how long it would take to replicate a design he'd done in Photoshop. It took a slightly anxious Danny 3-4 minutes, and when he was done the guy whipped out his credit card and signed up. Now, we know it's a lot faster to copy an existing design than it is to dream it up in the first place, but the point of the story is to confirm that you'll save heaps of time if you design your PHOTOSHOP page layouts in PHOTOJUNCTION. PJ Remix is about two things. First, delivering a great user experience is life or death. We’re Ubergeeks. We want – no we need – to be cool. So our mothers and girlfriends will respect us, and so you do too. Second, we want to help you do business in the real world, without hassles. How boring is that? And how hard a point to get across! Sometimes we think it has all the sales appeal of day-old fish. So when we came upon this story recently we jumped on it because it's so CLEAR. Once upon a time a photographer designed some matted albums in InDesign because they didn’t like Photojunction. To View More >>
