The first sells the booking, the second is the up-sell…" High-end photographers have been selling albums profitably for as long as we’ve been in business, but for many today it seems a lost art. Why? Obviously the world has changed — "shoot-and-share" and "just the files" are seductive ideas, and so is selling online. And who needs the hassle of getting people into the studio, playing nice, offering them bubbles and selling To View More >>

This week, 'Album of the Week' goes to Shevan J Photography! Check out this beautiful wedding, captured by Shevan's lovely photography. We love the story of how Shehara and Sachin first met too, and the cultural intermix of Buddhist, Hindu and Christian too. "Sachin and I first met  at  my 18th birthday in 2009. He had just moved to Melbourne from Sydney. He didn’t know many people at the time but fortunately had made a few friends in his first week who convinced him to come to my birthday drinks. Somehow, a month later, I was dating the random stranger from To View More >>

This is the third in a series from Megan DiPiero with advice about how to build a stronger brand and brand message— to add purpose to your marketing, draw attention to your service, and ultimately increase sales.  Click here for Parts 1 and 2. In my short life I've listened to music played on 7″ and 12″ vinyl records, reel-to-reel tapes, 4-track tapes, 8-track tapes, compact cassettes, CDs, digital audio tapes, DVDs, Blu-ray discs, streaming-music services, and many digital audio formats. With each media came a new player, destined to become outdated and therefore inaccessible. There are lessons in that for photographers… A personal story about media loss, and the pain it causes Earlier this year my wife and I emptied the house where she grew up. We found her childhood box of nearly perfect 45 rpm To View More >>

Apparently some people think free album design and colour correction is a temporary promotion. No, it’s here for good! Here for good as in permanent. Here for good as in good for you! So here’s how to have a happy New Year with … QUEENSBERRY'S 2014 ALBUM WORKFLOW 1. Upload your image files to Workspace. 2. Order the album (size, cover style, page type etc). 3. Select our free design and colour correction options. 4. Send your order. How’s that for easy? Your work goes out in an album you can be proud of, you pocket maybe 100% mark-up on the sale - and it takes next to none To View More >>

We'd never been to Lyttelton until a couple of years ago. At school we'd all learnt it was Christchurch's port, but that didn't mean you had to visit. Now everyone knows it's at the epicentre of Christchurch's earthquake. The reason I did eventually visit Lyttelton was to catch up with Johannes van Kan and Jo Grams. It's a fabulous little town, with a nice traditional pub (you walk down the corridor to the bathroom, just like the old days), lots of local music, good restaurants, great coffee, a beautiful setting. And in centre of the town the original, often funky, sometimes beautiful, apparently To View More >>

Heather recently returned from a Better By Design US Study Tour bursting at the seams with inspiration and excited to share her journey with the rest of us. Instead of a powerpoint presentation or a sit down discussion of what she learnt, she went about posting her thoughts and snippets of wisdom all over our office walls. (Which we actually think is a lot more fun for us to digest). Above are some of my favorite post-it notes, but to be honest I probably haven't even read them all yet! (There are hundreds). I'm glad Heather had a good trip, and I'm glad she was able to bring some excitement To View More >>

In many labs these days the only people who look at your prints are the Dispatch team. Strange as it seems, that makes sense – it's your files they’re printing, and something has to give if you want low prices. But it doesn’t make sense at Queensberry. We critique everything we print, including Print-Ready. The difference is we see the image files with Full Colour Service (because it’s our job to colour correct them) whereas we don’t see Print-Ready work until it’s printed . But why review Print-Ready work at all? Print-Ready means you edit your images yourself, and we don’t modify To View More >>

Nigel and I heard about My Portland Photographer through our friend Randy Kepple. What a great idea, well executed: "A collaborative blog by Portland's finest wedding photographers". On the home page a charming image and post by Craig Mitchelldyer caught my eye. I followed a couple of links back to see if photographers were linking back to the blog from their own websites, but apparently no. I wonder why. You'd win some and lose some, but if you built the google juice together, wouldn't you win more than you lose? Don't know, just wondering. Love it anyway. Cheers, Ian To View More >>
